WARNING on my last car a 78 Targa I acquired a set of 7 & 8 x16 Fuchs that had been badly cleaned ,so I consulted a local specialist polisher whom it turned out also did work for a well know wheel refurbished, he put me directly in touch and they agree to give the wheels a light skim/ diamond cut. This is a job that many people have carried out just for the shine,
when the wheels came back I decided to check them with a micrometer as I could detect a slight difference in profile . and OUCH!!!!!! they had removed best part of a millimetre . that doesn't sound much but as they start of at 5mm that is 20% of the strength , I contacted them immediately and asked why they had been so brutal. and the answer was ,
" oh we always have to do it like that to get rid of pitting" well that be true and after they were polished ,re-anodised and painted they looked genuinely as good as new , but I could not bring myself to keep them on the car and in time I found some original unmolested rims at great cost and used them so remember skimming is a absolute last resort not just cosmetic
